The Otis Name Mix-Up That Taught Me an Elevator Safety Lesson

But I like the confusion, in a way. It opens a door. Instead of being annoyed by the House of 1000 Corpses question, I can say, "No, that's a different guy. Let me show you what we do." That's customer education. It earns attention instead of assuming it. And for an industry that deals with life safety, attention is worth more than a quick repair.

Whether you're looking for Otis of elevator fame or stopping by after a late-night horror movie binge, the questions you should ask are the same. Who's qualified to work on this equipment? What safety code are they following? And what happens if a part fails?

If you hear a clicking sound, don't open the lock cover. Don't watch a video that tells you to bypass a switch. Don't assume it's like changing a shower head with hose or setting up your home theater. Call someone who knows the machine, ask questions, and get the fix documented.
